Cultivation practices of papaya

         Papaya it is also known as Wonder fruit of tropics and sub tropics, backyard fruit, breakfast fruit. papaya origin in south maxico. It is tropical fruit. Pepsin enzyme present in fruits.
Botonical name: Carica papaya, Family:Caricaceae, Pollination system: Cross pollination, Cromosome no.:2n=18,36. Caricaxanthin is yellow pigment.


Composition and uses
  • the fruit is a rich source of carbohydrate, minerals, vitamins and ascorbic acid
  • rich source of Vit-A after Mango.
  • Riped fruits are used in preparation of jam, syrup etc.
  • Papain is prepared from the dried latex of immature fruits, used for manufacture of drugs, meat tenderizing, manufacture of chewing gum.
  • Papain is used in extracting oil from the liver of Tuna fish it is rich

Propogation: seeds anr tissu culture plants
Planting season: June -July, Oct-Nov
Spacing: 1.8*1.8
Nutritional composition: FYM 10Kg/plant/pit
                                        200-250g. NPK/2 monthly
Micronutrients: ZnSO4 (0.5%) and H2BO3(0.1%)
Irrigation: Fortnightly interval in winter and at an interval of 10 days in summer.
Inter cropping: Cucurbits should not be grown in and around papaya orchard.
Yield: 75-100 tonnes/ ha
          250-275Kg/ ha / year papain yield.
